Santo Domingo. – This February 25, 2026, the Dominican Republic commemorates the 210th anniversary of the birth of Matías Ramón Mella, one of the Founding Fathers of the country and an essential figure in the consolidation of the independence ideal Dominican.
Born on February 25, 1816, in Santo Domingo, Mella stood out from an early age for his firm character, discipline, and commitment to the national cause. His name was etched in history on the night of February 27, 1844, when he carried out the historic "trabucazo" at the Puerta de la Misericordia, an action that marked the formal beginning of the struggle for national independence.
Mella was part of the secret society La Trinitaria, founded by Juan Pablo Duarte, along with Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and other patriots committed to the separation from Haiti and the creation of a free and sovereign nation. His courage and determination were decisive in the most critical moments of the independence process.
