Santo Domingo.– The community leader and activist of the Frente Amplio, Manuel Soler Pérez, questioned the decision issued by the Fourth Instruction Court of the National District that ruled not to proceed in favor of several people involved in the so-called Calamar Case, including the former Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo.
Soler Pérez maintained that the judicial decision is a consequence of alleged agreements between the main political forces of the country, noting that the measure affects the citizenry's trust in the justice system and limits the expectations of those who expect sanctions against those responsible for acts of corruption. "When we talk about billions of pesos allegedly taken from the State, we are not talking about small figures. The Dominican people expect answers and consequences for those who have committed irregularities in the management of public resources," he expressed. The leader stated that the court ruling strengthens the perception of impunity in broad sectors of the population and assured that citizens are watching with concern how high-profile cases conclude without convictions. We recommend reading: Ramón Pepín supports judicial decision that favors Gonzalo Castillo
Likewise, he criticized the statements offered by Gonzalo Castillo after the court's decision was announced, in which he expressed his aspirations to participate again in national politics. In Soler Pérez's opinion, that announcement represents a lack of sensitivity in the face of the public debate generated by the accusations that gave rise to the process. The Frente Amplio representative considered that the situation should serve as a reflection for the citizenry and called for supporting political alternatives that promote greater transparency, accountability, and the fight against corruption. Finally, he reiterated that the fight against impunity constitutes one of the main demands of Dominican society and urged the authorities to strengthen the independence of the institutions in charge of prosecuting and sanctioning acts of corruption.
