The Supreme Court of Iran overturned the death sentence against Kurdish activist Warishe Moradi after detecting procedural irregularities and ordered her case to be reviewed again.
"The resolution issued (death penalty) by Section 15 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran was annulled and the case has been returned to that same section for a new review," activist's lawyer Mostafa Nili informed on X this Wednesday.
The defense pointed out that the annulment of the death penalty occurred after the Supreme Court analyzed the appeal and concluded that during the previous process there were "deficiencies in the investigation and non-compliance with legal procedures".

Nili indicated that one of those irregularities was that the accused, 40 years old, was not properly informed of the specific charge that served as the basis for the death sentence. The ruling now obliges the court of origin to re-examine the case from the beginning and correct the irregularities indicated. Moradi, a Kurdish political activist and women's rights defender, was arrested and imprisoned in Evin prison in Tehran in August 2023, and a year later was sentenced to death, accused of "armed rebellion against the State", although it was not specified what that accusation was based on.
