California, USA. — U.S. federal authorities this week arrested Derrick Callella, a 42-year-old man residing in Hawthorne, California, for his alleged involvement in sending fraudulent messages demanding a ransom to the family of Nancy Guthrie, mother of prominent NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, who remains missing in Arizona.
According to a statement from the Department of Justice and media reports, Callella was arrested after sending text messages to members of the Guthrie family in which he requested a payment in Bitcoin in exchange for information about the whereabouts of the 84-year-old woman mother , whose disappearance is being investigated as a possible kidnapping since February 1st.
Callella was formally charged with transmitting a ransom demand across interstate lines of communication and using a telecommunications device to harass or threaten anonymously.
