New technologies drive transformation of internal audit, experts say

Internal auditing is currently undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and data analytics, which allow for the automation of operational tasks and the strengthening of strategic decision-making. This was stated by Anyel Rodríguez Rojas and Christian Walter Deus, international experts cited by the Association of Multiple Banks of the Dominican Republic (ABA), who explained that the incorporation of these technologies adds value by expanding operational coverage and facilitating the generation of more timely reports, in a context in which auditors face growing volumes of information. Both specialists, members of the Latin American Committee of Audit and Risk Evaluation of the Latin American Federation of Banks (Felaban), along with a group of 12 international speakers, will be in the country to participate in the 30th Latin American Congress of Internal Audit and Risk Evaluation (CLAIN), which will be held on May 21 and 22 at the Marriott Piantini hotel in Santo Domingo. When referring to the evolution of the auditor's role, which will be discussed at the event, Rodríguez Rojas indicated that the function has evolved from a focus on subsequent reviews to a more preventive and strategic role within organizations. "Data analytics, for example, drives the trend towards continuous auditing, which allows for alerts to detect and correct anomalies in real time in a high-volume transaction environment," said Rodríguez Rojas, who is an internal auditor at Banco Promerica in Costa Rica and president of the CLAIN Committee of Felaban. For his part, Deus, auditor general of the Banco de la Nación Argentina, stated that the management models supported by AI have substantially improved the efficiency and timeliness of the function. "Processes that previously required up to 45 days can now be completed in a period of between 15 and 20 days, integrating documentary verification, evidence gathering, and report preparation," he specified. In this context, they agreed that, far from being displaced by technology, the internal auditor is strengthened by relying on these tools to respond to the new demands of the regulatory and business environment. They also indicated that the internal audit has expanded its scope, incorporating areas such as credit risk analysis, sustainability, ESG criteria, cybersecurity, and other aspects related to corporate governance, in line with international best practices.

CLAIN Relevance

The CLAIN 2026 will be held under the theme “The innovative auditor as a strategic partner of senior management,” with an agenda that includes conferences and panels on credit risk, forensic auditing, cloud services, data protection, cybersecurity, organizational culture, and sustainability. Regarding this, Anyel Rodríguez Rojas and Christian Walter Deus defined the congress as a high-level technical space, which will bring together leaders from the regional financial sector, executives from international firms, and professionals who are driving the transition towards continuous and preventive audit models aimed at generating value. Among the confirmed speakers are the Superintendent of Banks of the Dominican Republic, Alejandro Fernández W.; the former Superintendent of Financial and Exchange Entities of Argentina, Cosme Juan Carlos Belmonte, and Nahun Frett, Vice President of Internal Audit of Central Romana, details the ABA note. The CLAIN will also include the awarding of a hackathon focused on innovative solutions in auditing, risk management, and strengthening controls. The congress details and registration form are available on the ABA website and at the link: https://aba.org.do/clain2026/ or via email comunicaciones@aba.org.do
