Taveras Guzmán presented a resolution requesting to declare of public utility lands of Los Alcarrizos, Boca Chica, Santo Domingo Este, Pantoja and among other sectors.

Santo Domingo.- The Senator of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Antonio Taveras Guzmán, presented a resolution project through which he requests President Luis Abinader to declare of public utility the lands where the State attorney executes forced evictions of communities and/or families with up to 40 years of residence.

The Senator for Santo Domingo explained that, although the National Congress has worked to provide titles to more than 27 neighborhoods threatened with eviction, in many cases the process has not been able to advance due to the webs of corruption that, in the past, allowed the sale of said State lands to private individuals, without taking into account the social and human development that already existed.

Upon taking a turn in the Upper House chamber, the senator said that the declaration of public utility would benefit thousands of families from La Caleta, Santa Lucía, Barrio Libertad in Boca Chica, Los Coquitos de Mendoza, Brisas de Edén, Buenaventura de Mendoza, El Isabelita, El Valiente, Boca Chica, Los Humerales de Pantoja, Villa Progreso 1, 2 and 3 of Los Alcarrizos, La Grúa de Mendoza, Nueva Jerusalén, Loma Miranda in Los Alcarrizos, and other neighborhoods that meet the established criteria.

“Hacemos un llamado al abogado del Estado a que pare esos desalojos, y al presidente de la República para que declare estos terrenos de utilidad pública y establezca una forma de pago”, expresó Taveras Guzmán.

The legislator supported his proposal in the name of “27 neighborhoods of my province, humble people, hardworking people and people who are afraid like Father Jorge from the Santa Lucía church, who does not sleep because he believes they are going to tear down his Catholic church at dawn,” said Taveras, visibly affected by the situation.

The Senator recalled that Santo Domingo province has a population of almost four million inhabitants, with enormous but disorganized growth. A large part of its neighborhoods, he explained, were born from the occupation of state land, which is why, together with President Luis Abinader, his office has been working for more than four years on titling solutions to avoid evictions and guarantee the right to housing for thousands of families.
