Santo Domingo.— The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), through its Vice-Rector's Office of Extension, held a floral offering this Thursday before the bust erected on the university campus in honor of Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez, on the occasion of the 89th anniversary of his birth.
The activity was organized jointly with the Committee Pro-Homage to the Birth of José Francisco Peña Gómez, the Dominican Modern University Front (FUDOMO) and the Extracurricular Chair Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez, attached to the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences of the academy.
During the event, Dr. Franklin García Fermín, former rector of UASD and former minister of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT), delivered the keynote speech, in which he highlighted the historical, political, and moral significance of the Dominican social democratic leader.
García Fermín highlighted that Peña Gómez represents one of the most influential figures in the consolidation of contemporary Dominican democracy and an ethical reference for new generations. "Doctor Peña Gómez constitutes one of the most extraordinary stories of personal overcoming and political commitment in the Dominican Republic.

“From humble origins, he managed to become one of the most powerful voices in defense of democracy, social justice, and the rights of the most vulnerable sectors,” he expressed. He pointed out that the historic leader of the Dominican Revolutionary Party knew how to interpret the aspirations of broad sectors of Dominican society, becoming a true mass leader and a firm defender of public freedoms. "Peña Gómez's legacy transcends the electoral processes in which he participated. His fundamental contribution was to strengthen the country's democratic culture and promote a vision of development based on social inclusion, citizen participation, and respect for human dignity," he stated. García Fermín also highlighted the international dimension of the Dominican political leader, who gained recognition in different arenas of social democratic thought and the defense of human rights. The former rector of UASD affirmed that remembering the figure of Peña Gómez within the academy implies reflecting on the responsibility of educational institutions in the formation of citizens committed to democratic values.Upon concluding the event, the organizers placed the floral offering before the bust of the political leader, as a sign of recognition for his historical legacy and his permanent influence on the democratic life of the country. The activity was attended by Dr. Rosalía Sosa Pérez, Vice-Rector of Extension of UASD, Fabio Ruiz, Augusto Bravo, Gerardo Roa, among other university authorities, professors, students, political leaders and representatives of various sectors of Dominican society dominicana."The Dominican university has the duty to preserve the memory of those leaders who contributed to broaden the democratic horizons of the nation and to strengthen the civic consciousness of the people," he indicated.
