Norris, 25, who had started from 'pole', achieved his sixth victory in F1, the second of the year and the first in the principality of the French Riviera; by winning ahead of Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and the other McLaren, that of Australian Oscar Piastri, who continues to lead the World Championship.

Piastri leads the competition with 161 points, three more than his teammate Norris; and with 25 over the quadruple Dutch world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who finished fourth in the most iconic race of the year.

The seven-time crowned English Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) was fifth, one place ahead of the debutant French Isack Hadjar (RB).
The French Esteban Ocon (Haas) finished seventh; and the New Zealander Liam Lawson was eighth, on a great day for RB - formerly Alpha Tauri and previously Toro Rosso.

Sainz, who had achieved three of his 27 podium finishes on this track, settled for tenth place, one behind his teammate, Thai Alex Albon, scoring the last points at stake for Williams.

The next Grand Prix, the Spanish one, will be held next weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, in Montmeló.
