PHILADELPHIA — Zack Wheeler shined from the mound with a 10-strikeout performance in eight innings and Nick Castellanos provided power with a solo home run, guiding the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-0 victory over the San Diego Padres this Monday night.

The triumph marked Bryce Harper's return to the lineup after an absence of almost a month due to inflammation in his right wrist. Although he went 0-2, he was hit by a pitch, received a walk, and participated in a double play with a caught line drive. Wheeler (8-3) limited the Padres to six hits, without giving up any walks, in a solid outing that solidified his status as one of the pillars of the rotation of the leaders of the East in the National League. Nick Castellanos hit his home run in the fifth inning against Matt Waldron (0-1), who was making his season debut after recovering from an oblique strain. The San Diego knuckleballer allowed four runs, walked six, and only completed 4.2 innings. Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill prevented the score from opening up earlier by robbing Max Kepler of a three-run home run in the third inning with a spectacular catch over the center field wall. However, Philadelphia kept pressing: Bryson Stott got on base with a walk, stole second, and scored after a ground ball by Brandon Marsh with a slide at the plate that made the game 2-0. Marsh then crossed the plate thanks to an infield hit by Trea Turner. For the Padres, Luis Arráez went 2-for-4, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado went 1-for-4 each. With this victory, the Phillies maintain their good momentum and add another solid performance from their ace up their sleeve, while the Padres continue to struggle to find stability in their rotation.
