Manhattan shooting attacker identified as 27-year-old from Las Vegas

New York. – At least four people, including an officer of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), died this Monday during a shooting that occurred in a building in Midtown Manhattan, according to authorities. The alleged attacker, preliminarily identified as a 27-year-old man originally from Las Vegas, also died, apparently from a self-inflicted wound. Police indicated that he acted alone and that the situation was quickly contained.

“The lone attacker is dead and the scene has been secured,” the NYPD reported in a post on social media X (formerly Twitter).

Although an image of the suspect has not been made public, sources shared with CNN a photograph showing him entering the building carrying a long gun, wearing dark glasses and a dark jacket. According to initial verifications, the subject had no significant criminal record.

As of yet, it has not been determined whether the attacker had a specific target inside the building. The seriously injured police officer had undergone surgery, but subsequently died, an official reported. The FBI joined the scene to support the investigation led by the New York Police Department. This was confirmed by the agency's deputy director, Dan Bongino, who also indicated that the motive for the attack is still under investigation. The Attorney General, Pam Bondi, added that the federal prosecutor in New York has established a joint command post, while teams from the FBI and other agencies remain at the crime scene. For his part, New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged citizens to avoid the area of Park Avenue and East 51st Street, and assured that an active investigation is underway. The state governor, Kathy Hochul, was also informed about the incident and asked citizens to stay away from the affected area. Videos captured by media outlets show a strong police presence and authorities acting with extreme caution around the building where the attack was reported.
