The 31-year-old opener threw seven scoreless innings, limiting the Orioles to just three hits and demonstrating his experience at a key moment in the final stretch. With this outing, Fried raised his record to 18 wins on the year and added 182 strikeouts in 188.1 innings, figures that represent personal bests in his first season with the Yankees. "I'm emptying the tank, there are few openings left and I want to give my best," Fried declared after his dominant performance. The New York offense backed the lefty early. Amed Rosario hit a two-run single in the first inning, while Austin Wells drove in another in the fifth inning. The definitive rally came in the seventh, with a run-scoring single by Paul Goldschmidt, a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge, and a two-run double by Giancarlo Stanton. With the victory, the Yankees (86-67) took advantage of Toronto's (89-64) loss to Tampa Bay to move within three games of the Blue Jays in the American League East Division. In addition, they maintain a two-game lead over Houston and Seattle in the race for the first wild card. Fried's strikeout record comes at a crucial moment for New York, which is looking to finish the regular season strong and position itself as a dangerous contender in October.
