Investigation into collapse that temporarily trapped 80 miners in Maimón

The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported this Wednesday that it initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the incident that occurred on Tuesday at the facilities of the Dominican Mining Corporation (Cormidom), in Maimón, where an internal landslide caused the temporary interruption of operations and the subsequent evacuation of 80 workers who were rescued hours later.

Energy and Mines, in its role as the governing body of the mining sector, coordinates with the General Directorate of Mining (DGM) the technical evaluation of the event, with the aim of ensuring compliance with mining safety protocols and the protection of personnel and communities near the operation.

Immediately, the Ministry activated the inter-institutional coordination mechanisms with the State's response agencies. The Emergency Operations Center (COE), the National Emergency and Security System 9-1-1, the Fire Department, as well as specialized rescue teams from the company, participated in the work.

Thanks to the rapid action of Cormidom and the acting entities, it was possible to evacuate in an orderly manner all the personnel present in the affected area, without any human losses or injuries being recorded.

"The government's priority is to preserve the lives and safety of workers, ensure transparency in the investigation, and strengthen preventive measures in all mining operations in the country," it indicates.

Energy and Mines announced that, once the investigation is concluded, the results and corresponding recommendations will be made public, with a view to reinforcing the culture of safety and sustainability in national mining.
