Storm Melissa will cause heavy rains in Greater Santo Domingo and the South during the afternoon and evening of this Thursday

Santo Domingo. – The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that intense showers, electrical storms, and wind gusts will continue to be recorded during the afternoon and night of this Thursday in a large part of the country, as a result of the incidence of the tropical storm Melissa. According to the agency's report, satellite images show a dense cloud field that especially affects Greater Santo Domingo and several provinces under meteorological alert. On its official X account (formerly Twitter), Indomet explained that "clouds generating heavy showers with electrical storms and isolated wind gusts are affecting different locations in the national territory."

Earlier, the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), Juan Manuel Méndez, urged the population to remain attentive to official bulletins and follow the recommendations of the rescue organizations in the face of the possible effects of the storm. The atmospheric phenomenon has reduced its maximum sustained winds to 75 kilometers per hour and is moving at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour. Currently, its center is located about 450 kilometers southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and 355 kilometers from Kingston, Jamaica. Nine provinces remain on red alert: Barahona, San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, San José de Ocoa, San Juan, Azua, Peravia, and Pedernales.

Authorities warned that this category indicates a high risk, so they urge residents in those areas to have their "emergency kit" prepared and to take shelter in safe places before the impact of the phenomenon.

La Vega, La Romana, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, La Altagracia, Elías Piña, Monte Plata, Independencia and Bahoruco are under yellow alert.
This level implies the possibility of severe emergency situations, so people living in vulnerable areas are advised to move to shelters or safe housing. For their part, María Trinidad Sánchez, Santiago and Duarte remain on green alert, a category that warns of atmospheric conditions that could become dangerous if the system continues to intensify. Authorities expect the rains to continue and even intensify over the next 48 hours due to the cloud cover that covers a large part of the national territory.
