Red Sox and Blue Jays show interest in Ketel Marte

UNITED STATES. IN months after Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen confirmed he was willing to listen to offers for second baseman Ketel Marte, the market around the Dominican star continues to intensify.

According to MLB Network analyst, Jon Heyman, several teams have shown strong interest in acquiring the 32-year-old player. Among them are the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, and possibly the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition, The Athletic reported that the Cincinnati Reds are also evaluating the possibility of making a move for the veteran infielder.

A Star in Great Shape

Marte is coming off another outstanding season in 2025, in which he recorded 28 home runs, an OPS of .893, and a WAR of 4.6 (according to FanGraphs) in 126 games. Since 2023, his performance places him among the top 15 MLB players in both WAR (15.3) and wRC+ (140). He has also won a Silver Slugger and has been selected to the All-Star Game in the last two seasons, solidifying himself as a figure of offensive and defensive impact.

An attractive contract that increases its value

One of the factors driving the demand for Marte is his accessible contract: he will receive US$91 million for the next five seasons, with a player option of US$11.5 million after 2030. His productivity combined with his contractual situation makes Arizona demand a considerable package in any negotiation.

Another name in the spotlight: Brandon Lowe

In addition to Marte, another second baseman generating interest in the trade market is Brandon Lowe, from the Rays. According to Jon Paul Morosi of MLB Network, the possibility of Tampa Bay moving him has increased during the Winter Meetings. The Rays recently exercised the club option for US$11.5 million for 2026, and Lowe will be a free agent at the end of that campaign. Cincinnati is among the interested teams, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have also held conversations with the Rays regarding a possible deal.

A second base market more active than ever

With several teams looking to reinforce the middle infield and with high-level options like Marte and Lowe available, this winter is shaping up to be one of the most active periods for the position in recent years.
