Venezuela. — At least 24 Venezuelan security agents died in the U.S. military operation in the middle of the night to capture Nicolás Maduro and transfer him to the United States to face federal drug-related charges, officials reported Tuesday. Venezuela's Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, said that "dozens" of officials and civilians were killed and that prosecutors would investigate the deaths in what he described as a "war crime." He did not specify whether the estimate referred specifically to Venezuelans. The number of deaths among Venezuelan security officials comes after the Cuban government announced on Sunday that 32 Cuban military and police officers working in Venezuela had died in the operation, which led to two days of mourning on the Caribbean island.

A video tribute to slain Venezuelan security officials posted on military Instagram shows the faces of many of the deceased, over black and white videos of soldiers, US planes flying over Caracas, and armored vehicles destroyed by explosions. "His spilled blood does not cry out for revenge, but for justice and strength," the army wrote in an Instagram post. "It reaffirms our unwavering oath to not rest until we rescue our legitimate president, completely dismantle the terrorist groups operating from abroad, and ensure that events like these never again stain our sovereign soil."
