Peru will increase entrance fees to Machu Picchu from May

Lima .- The Peruvian Government will increase from next May the entrance fee to Machu Picchu, in the southern region of Cusco, to allocate that amount to the "maintenance of the natural resources" of that archaeological and natural park, informed the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Teresa Mera.

"This increase is due to a need to have resources for the maintenance of the park; it must be taken into consideration that it was approved by the UGM (Management Unit of Machu Picchu) in 2022 and for various reasons it was being postponed," Mera said in statements published by the official Andina agency. The new fee will take effect from next May 1st and will involve an additional payment of 11 soles ($3.2) for foreign tourists over 18 years of age, who will now be charged 163 soles for access ($48.6). In the case of foreign minors, between 3 and 17 years old, the additional payment will be 5 soles (1.5 dollars), making the final payment 157 soles (46.8 dollars).

For domestic tourists and those from the countries of the Andean Community (which Peru integrates along with Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador), the increase will be 5 soles (1.49 dollars), with the fare increasing to 69 soles (20.5 dollars), and for minors, between 3 and 17 years old, it will reach 67 soles (20 dollars), after a increase of 3 soles (0.89 dollars).

Park Accessibility Improvements

Mera commented, in this regard, that the price increase has a "technical basis" and will serve for the maintenance of the natural resources of the area, which is a cultural and natural heritage of humanity since 1983.

"We really need to take action to improve the accessibility conditions of the park. Consideration was given at the time to the need for improvements, for that we need a little more resources," he remarked. The minister emphasized that the increase is based on a "technical evaluation" and announced that it is still being evaluated whether the adjustment also applies to tourists who have already purchased their entrance tickets to Machu Picchu for next June and July, which is the high season for visitors to the famous archaeological site.
