Amazon plans to invest $12 billion in data centers in Louisiana (USA)

New York.- E-commerce giant Amazon announced this Monday that it plans to invest 12 billion dollars in its first artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in the state of Louisiana (southern USA), with which it seeks to support its cloud services.

Amazon, in a statement, indicated that the project, located in Caddo and Bossier districts, will create 540 full-time direct jobs and another 1,710 indirect jobs, and also highlighted that it will be in charge of covering "100% of the costs" of the infrastructure's operation. The technology company will collaborate with the North Louisiana Economic Development consortium, which added that construction will begin "in the coming weeks" and set up a website to explain how the centers work and look for workers, from electricians and plumbers to engineers.

"Construction on the data center campuses is expected to begin imminently, and operations will be phased in over the next few years," notes a statement from the consortium, which specifies that these campuses will be on both sides of the Red River and that "will bring communities together."

The environmental sustainability of the project

In addition to the investment in infrastructure itself, Amazon announced that it will invest 400 million in public water and sewage systems to "responsibly obtain" this resource, which it uses to cool data centers. The consortium, as well as Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, said in the note that they expect the project to "generate significant new tax revenue" for the region and to help fund essential public services, local schools, and infrastructure improvements in nearby areas. The company indicated that it will also collaborate with the electric services company Southwestern Electric Power Company to ensure that it covers "100% of the costs" of the data centers, and recalled that it has previously invested in solar energy projects in the state.

Amazon recently released its quarterly results and estimated that it will invest around $200 billion in capital expenditures in 2026 alone, largely related to the data centers needed to power AI technologies, which are in high demand.
