Almost 5,000 people have been arrested in Venezuela this year, according to the police chief

Caracas .- A total of 4,919 people have been arrested in Venezuela this year, reported the director of the Scientific, Criminal, and Criminalistic Investigations Corps (CICPC), Douglas Rico, according to a note published this Tuesday by the Ministry of Interior, which does not specify the crimes of those arrested.

In his Telegram channel, the State portfolio indicated that Rico also reported that in this 2026, 483 firearms and 2,385 ammunitions have been seized. He also detailed that 1,128 vehicles and 1,227 mobile devices have been recovered. Rico urged Venezuelans not to interfere in the "legitimate police actions" and demanded from the officials a "dignified and professional treatment towards the population." "We must ensure that the Police respect the people and that citizens trust their institutions, allowing the justice process to flow smoothly," underlined the police chief, quoted in the note.

In addition, he asked Venezuelans to go to the nearest CICPC delegation in the face of "any irregularity".

The complaints

Last January, the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, assured before Parliament that the country registered a rate of three homicides per 100,000 inhabitants during the year 2025, an indicator lower than the 4.1 of 2024.

In November 2025, the Venezuelan Minister of the Interior, Diosdado Cabello, requested the installation of cameras in the "greatest amount" of the national territory in order to prevent crimes and emergencies. Several NGOs, such as Provea, have denounced "the illegal review of cell phones" by "police and military," which -they added- has "become a common abuse" and that "it is not normal to have to delete messages, photos, networks or any content for fear that it is 'subversive'." Last March, the NGO VE Sin Filtro denounced in a report that the Government of Venezuela uses its citizen security technological system as a tool of political control.
