Santo Domingo.- Accepting the request of the Public Ministry, a court imposed 30 years in prison on a man prosecuted for attempted murder and aggravated gender-based and domestic violence, after he shot his ex-partner in 2024 in front of a busy pastry shop in Santiago.

Pedro Samuel Fernández Sánchez was prosecuted by the Public Ministry with numerous pieces of evidence that showed that he threatened, surveilled, pursued, and intercepted the victim, shooting her in the face with the intention of killing her, using a firearm that he carried illegally.

The aggression caused the victim psychological and permanent aesthetic sequelae due to physical-facial disfigurement, according to the forensic medical expertise carried out by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif).

In addition to the violation of articles 2, 295, 296, 297, 298, 302, 309-1, 309-2 and 309-3 (letters B, C and E) of the Dominican Penal Code, modified by Law 24-97 on Gender Violence, which typify and sanction attempted murder and aggravated gender violence, the Santiago Prosecutor's Office accused the defendant of violating articles 66 and 67 of Law 631-16 for the Control and Regulation of Weapons, Ammunition and Related Materials.

The Public Ministry, the litigator asserted, demonstrated that the defendant premeditated the acts and committed them with treachery, since he rented a Honda vehicle, model CRV-EX-L, white, to carry out the persecution without the victim noticing.

In March 2024, he waited for the victim in front of her workplace, where the woman arrived aboard a motorcycle taxi. After warning her what he was going to do, the defendant shot the woman and subsequently fled the scene.

The Public Prosecutor's investigation, through its Comprehensive Care Unit for Victims of Gender-Based Violence, Domestic Violence and Sexual Offenses, presented to the court the material evidence of the process, such as the illegal firearm used by the defendant.

Among other evidence, the Public Ministry managed to collect the videos from the video surveillance cameras that captured the events, as well as screenshots of conversations, both with the victim and with other friends and family, which showed their intentions.
