Azua authorities commemorate the 182nd anniversary of the Battle of Tortuguero

Azua, R.D. – Civil and military authorities commemorated this Wednesday, April 15th, the 182nd anniversary of the historic Battle of Tortuguero, considered the first naval feat of the Dominican Republic.

The patriotic act took place in the port of Tortuguero, where representatives of different institutions, along with members of the Armed Forces, students, and community members, paid tribute to the heroes who starred in this transcendental event that occurred in 1844.

During the ceremony, floral offerings were laid, and the notes of the National Anthem were sung, in an atmosphere charged with civic spirit and respect. The authorities highlighted the courage and bravery of the Dominicans who faced the Haitian forces in defense of national sovereignty.

In the activity, the governor of Azua, María Minerva Navarro, was present, along with other civil and military authorities, who reaffirmed their commitment to the preservation of historical memory and patriotic values.

In their interventions, officials highlighted that this battle marked a milestone in national history, consolidating the maritime defense of the country and laying the foundations of the Dominican Navy.

The Battle of Tortuguero was fought by three Dominican schooners, commanded by Admiral Juan Bautista Cambiaso, who managed to defeat several enemy ships, securing a strategic victory at the beginning of the War of Independence.

With this commemoration, the authorities of Azua reaffirm their commitment to preserve historical memory and strengthen patriotic values in the new generations.
