World Marijuana Day: between culture, debate and regulation

Santo Domingo. Every April 20th, World Marijuana Day is commemorated, known internationally as “4/20”, a date that brings together thousands of people in different parts of the world to reflect on the use of cannabis, its social impact, and its legal status. The day, which has its origins in the 1970s in California, has evolved from a simple code among young people to a global cultural phenomenon. Today, 4/20 is used both for recreational gatherings and to promote movements that advocate for the legalization and regulation of cannabis. In various countries, this date is celebrated with public activities, concerts, and demonstrations, where activists and citizens promote changes in drug policies, as well as greater access to the medicinal use of marijuana. The debate surrounding cannabis continues to be extensive. While some nations have moved towards its full or partial legalization, others maintain strict restrictions. Health experts insist on the importance of educating about its effects, especially in young populations, and promoting responsible consumption in places where it is permitted.
