"Misinformation is a challenge that impacts governance," says Antoliano Peralta

Spain. – The Minister of Justice, Antoliano Peralta Romero, reaffirmed the Dominican State's commitment to the protection of institutionalism and the fight against misinformation during his participation in the IV Meeting of the international initiative "En Defense of Democracy", held in Barcelona, Spain. The meeting, driven by the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brought together representatives from more than 20 nations with the purpose of coordinating actions in the face of the challenges of the digital environment and the strengthening of multilateralism. During his intervention in the block dedicated to disinformation and digital technologies, Peralta Romero described this phenomenon as a turning point in human communication that directly impacts the stability of nations.

It is a complex challenge that, without a doubt, has had a transcendental impact on governance and that represents a turning point in the way we inform ourselves, communicate, and relate”, the official pointed out.

The minister was emphatic in pointing out that, although the deployment of resources and the harmonization of democratic principles are arduous tasks, the complexity of the digital age cannot be an excuse for inaction. He warned that contexts where laws are ignored or computer crimes are tolerated should not be fostered.

The minister clarified that this initiative is strictly based on the democratic values and principles established in the Constitution. Likewise, he emphasized that the Dominican strategy is not limited to the legal, but includes: promotion of critical thinking, digital literacy from an early age and education as a fundamental pillar to mitigate the impact of fake news.

Upon concluding his speech, the Justice Secretary reiterated that the country says "present" on the international stage to ensure that technological tools translate into well-being for citizens and future generations.

The Dominican Republic's presence in this international forum underscores the Government's vision of actively collaborating in the construction of a digital environment more secure, transparent, and respectful of the Rule of Law.
