The U.S. Army will create an autonomous AI-based warfare force in Latin America

Miami.- The United States Army ordered this Tuesday the creation of an autonomous war force based on artificial intelligence that will support the work of the U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, to dismantle narcoterrorist networks and achieve other objectives. "The new command will be dedicated to the employment of autonomous, semi-autonomous, and unmanned platforms and systems to counter threats and challenges in various areas, linking tactical missions with long-term strategic effects," Southcom said in a statement. The announcement was made by the commander of this U.S. force, Francis L. Donovan, and will aim to "dismantle and weaken narcoterrorist and cartel networks, and respond to life-threatening crises caused by large-scale natural disasters". The development of this war force will be carried out with the help of AI, which will provide the necessary autonomy for this unprecedented command.

"From the seabed to space and throughout the cyber realm, we are firmly intent on leveraging the clear superiority of the U.S. defense ecosystem by deploying cutting-edge innovations and increasingly close collaboration with our permanent partners in the region to overcome those who threaten our collective peace and security," said Donovan.

Modernization

The War Department -formerly known as the Department of Defense- recently created the Autonomous Defense Warfare Group (DAWG) initiative, to integrate AI and autonomous systems into its combat operations.

Donovan explained last March before Congress that he wanted to develop and deploy modernized and cost-effective forces in the Southcom area of influence "to considerably increase lethality, all-domain awareness, and data sharing for U.S. and allied forces. The Southcom is one of the six unified commands of the United States Armed Forces, each with a specific geographic focus.
