UN Representative in Haiti calls for strengthening arms embargo and arms control

United Nations.- The Special Representative of the UN in Haiti, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, requested this Thursday to reinforce the arms embargo and the tightening of arms controls to address the spiral of violence that surrounds the Caribbean country. "This cycle (of violence) must be broken. Reinforcing the enforcement of the arms embargo, the fight against trafficking, and the strengthening of arms controls must remain an absolute priority," Massieu added in a briefing to the Security Council on Haiti. The meeting at the Council took place within the framework of the BINUH mission (United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti), focused on the deterioration of security, the humanitarian crisis, and the political stagnation of the country.
