Sudan raises to 58 the dead from an attack by paramilitaries in North Kordofan

Khartoum.- The government of the Sudanese state of North Kordofan reported on Saturday that the death toll from the attack perpetrated yesterday by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the town of Bara rose to 58 after the discovery of 27 new bodies in the Azhaf area, west of the town. According to a statement released by Sudan's official television channel, the bodies were found this Saturday, which significantly increased the death toll from an assault attributed to the paramilitaries and which occurred during the second day of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, known as the Feast of Sacrifice. Initially, the Sudanese Doctors' Network had reported that the attack caused the death of at least 27 civilians, including the elderly, while local authorities and tribal leaders put the figure at 31. The medical organization assured that a force of the FAR burst into several villages in the Al Marra area, in western Bara, and described the event as a "new crime against civilians in areas without military presence". For its part, the General Union of the Dar Hamid Tribe stated that around 20 combat vehicles from the SAF participated in the attack against the villages of Al Marra, Umm Saadoun Al Sharif and Al Radha. The group noted that a local mobilization managed to repel the attackers, although it warned that the situation remains tense.

The Sudanese Doctors Network denounced that what happened constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and warned that this type of attack aggravates the situation of a population already affected by the scarcity of food, basic services, and security. The three states of the Kordofan region, bordering Darfur, have become recurring scenes of clashes between the Sudanese Army and the RSF since the beginning of the war in April 2023. The conflict has caused the death of some 400,000 people, according to US estimates, and has triggered the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis, according to international organizations.
