Santo Domingo - Members of the Dominican Republic Army (ERD) seized a contraband of 168,000 units of cigarettes during an operation carried out in the border area of the municipality of Pepillo Salcedo, in Manzanillo, the military organization reported this Friday.

Upon noticing the military presence, "the individuals fled aboard a boat, leaving behind several boxes containing 840 packs, of 200 units each, for a total of 168,000 cigarettes," the agency specified in a statement. The merchandise was moved to Fortress Beller, headquarters of the 10th Infantry Battalion of the ERD, where it was placed under custody for the corresponding legal purposes.
