Santo Domingo.– President Luis Abinader is meeting with former presidents Leonel Fernández, Danilo Medina, and Hipólito Mejía in a meeting convened to address national security issues, the crisis in Haiti, and its impact on the Dominican Republic.
The high-level meeting takes place at the Ministry of Defense, where upon their arrival, the Head of State and former presidents were received with military honors, which included a 21-gun salute and the singing of the Dominican National Anthem.
With their attendance at this meeting, the former presidents are responding to an invitation made by President Abinader on April 28, in which he proposed a joint or individual dialogue with the former heads of state, in the place they preferred.
It is recalled that last Monday, Abinader indicated that in this so-called "summit" only the aforementioned topics will be discussed, without involving topics of a political nature.
“It's a meeting where we are going to focus on the security aspect and the situation in Haiti. We are going to offer information so that they are aware of the current reality, the actions of the gangs, the few actions of the international community, and the measures adopted by the governments,” Abinader specified.
In that sense, the president emphasized that political issues will not be discussed during the meeting, but rather it will be an informational session focused on the security context.

In addition, he reiterated that all national sectors will subsequently be convened, through the Economic and Social Council (CES), to discuss more broadly the actions that most benefit the country.
“We are not going to discuss any policy there. It will simply be for information and focused on the issue of security,” he reiterated.
