COE: Yellow alert for coastal strip and 10 provinces in green due to Hurricane Erin

Santo Domingo. – The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has raised to yellow alert the entire coastal strip from La Altagracia to Montecristi due to the indirect effects of hurricane Erin, which has reached category 5 with sustained winds of up to 160 mph (257 km/h). Erin's outer bands are expected to generate heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and wind gusts in the next 24 to 48 hours, mainly affecting the country's coastal areas.

The COE issues the following prohibitions and recommendations due to the effects of Erin

  • Use of beaches and water sports: The use of beaches and the practice of water sports on the Atlantic coast from La Altagracia to Montecristi is prohibited due to the danger posed by the strong waves generated by the hurricane.
  • Wave observation: The population is prohibited from approaching the coast to observe the strong waves, as this action represents a risk to personal safety.
  • Caribbean coast: On the Caribbean coast, navigation is permitted with due caution, remaining attentive to the recommendations of the local authorities.

Hurricane Erin

The cyclone, which gained strength early in the morning, was located about 170 kilometers northeast of Anguilla and 375 kilometers from Puerto Rico, as it continues its westward course at a speed of 28 kilometers per hour. For the moment, Erin is not near land, but authorities have urged the population of the Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, as well as Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas to closely monitor the progress of the system.
