JC Guilbe: “There are still many public places in the DR with the potential for a tragedy equal to or worse than the Jet Set”

Santo Domingo.- Engineer Juan Carlos Guilbe warned that in the Dominican Republic there are still numerous public spaces with serious deficiencies in their emergency exits, which could generate tragedies similar to or even worse than the one that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub.

Guilbe, specialist in fire protection systems, pointed out that many buildings are not prepared to face fires or other situations that require quick and safe evacuations.

His statements were made within the framework of the free workshop “Evacuation Route Design”, organized by his company FireTech Academy, in which more than 300 people participated.

The event, held at the JW Marriott hotel, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of proper planning, signage, and maintenance of emergency exits in both public and private buildings.

“The country must take the necessary measures to ensure that a tragedy like the Jet Set one does not happen again. It is a priority that all of us, from the authorities and citizens, can understand the importance of having necessary and well-marked evacuation routes,” Guilbe stated during his speech.

More than 20 members of the National District Fire Department participated in the meeting, including those responsible for the technical department, who expressed their concern about the deficiencies in emergency exits in many public spaces in the country. They also expressed their interest in adopting urgent measures to reinforce security in these environments.

The workshop was developed in accordance with the guidelines of the NFPA 101 standard (2004 edition), which focuses on human safety and fire protection. It was aimed at construction professionals, local administrators, security personnel, and the general public.
