PLD assures TSE ruling does not nullify its process of choosing a presidential candidate

Santo Domingo.- Danilo Díaz, the delegate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) before the Central Electoral Board (JCE), denied that the ruling issued this Friday by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) annuls the consultation process that this organization intends to organize to choose its candidate for the presidential candidacy. "The ruling just announced by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) does not prohibit the Dominican Liberation Party from holding its consultation in the year 2026," said Diaz, according to a note from that party.

He explained that what has been annulled is everything related to the registration of applicants, "which was not organized" by the competent body. He said that the TSE, according to the wording of the ruling, relies on the PLD's statutes to establish its position, which "to a large extent" is a recognition of the regulations that govern the daily life of the PLD. "The ruling makes it clear that it is a matter for the Central Committee and not the Political Committee to regulate the consultation process, open registration, and establish the rules of the game that guarantee equal opportunities for all applicants," he added. In practical terms, according to the note, Díaz explained that the ruling establishes "how the consultation should be done, that is, it clarifies which is the competent body in the PLD to carry it out." He said that the sentence ratifies the power of the Peledeísta Political Committee to propose and that the Central Committee is the party body that must regulate the process, define what relates to the registration of aspirations and guarantee participation in an egalitarian manner. The Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) declared today illegal the internal consultation that the Dominican Liberation Party seeks to hold to choose its presidential candidate two years in advance of the 2028 elections. According to the high court's decision, the process initiated by the PLD's Political Committee to conduct a consultation in the first quarter of 2026 to identify and select a presidential candidate does not comply with the principles of legality and fairness established in the current electoral regulations.
