Her father, Scott Kingsley Swift, has been a financial advisor at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, grew up in Pennsylvania, and is a descendant of three generations of bank presidents. Her mother, Andrea Gardner Swift, is a homemaker and worked as a marketing executive at an investment fund.

She has a brother named Austin and they were raised as Presbyterians, attending Vacation Bible School every summer. At age nine, Taylor began to take an interest in musical theater, participating in various productions of the Berks Youth Theatre Academy. She also traveled regularly for singing and acting classes to Broadway.

She began composing songs at age 13, and her performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the 2003 US Open caught the attention of music manager Dan Dymtrow, who helped Swift secure an artist development deal with RCA Records in Nashville, with which she managed to record a demo that same year. Later, she signed with Big Machine Records in 2005 to become a country singer, being the youngest artist signed by Sony Music Publishing.
She released six studio albums under the label, four of them for country radio, starting with her debut album Taylor Swift (2006). Her next album, Fearless (2008), explored country pop and its singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me" catapulted her to fame, being the most awarded album in the history of country music.
She is known for writing narrative songs and compositions about her personal experiences. As a songwriter, she has been honored by the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Due to various factors, such as her impact on the music world, her sustained commercial success, and her media influence, Taylor Swift was named the "woman of the decade" in 2019 by Billboard magazine, while at the American Music Awards she was recognized as the "artist of the decade".
