Valparaíso (Chile), June 1 (EFE).- Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced this Sunday that he will ask the Legislature to approve an urgent law that prohibits the import of products from Israeli settlements.
During his speech on the occasion of his latest public address, the leader also urged the peoples to seek peace and described the far-right coalition led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a "genocidal government".
"It is these same principles that have led me to strongly raise my voice against the genocide and ethnic cleansing that the Government of Israel is committing against the Palestinian people. For this reason, I called our ambassador in Israel for consultations, I have instructed the withdrawal of our military attachés from that country, we suspended Israel's participation in the traditional International Air and Space Fair (Fidae)," explained the president in reference to Chile's respect for human rights.
Likewise, "we intervened in the complaint filed by South Africa against Israel for violations of the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and we requested, along with Mexico, that the International Criminal Court investigate the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza, after which international arrest warrants were issued against the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and other senior officials of the Israeli Government," he assured."That said, considering Israel's permanent violation of international law through illegal settlements in Palestinian territory and the recent announcement of the expansion of this policy, I have decided that it is only fair to sponsor and give urgency to the bill that prohibits the import of products produced in illegally occupied territories," he announced.
"Furthermore, I have instructed the Minister of Defense to present me as soon as possible a plan to diversify our commercial relations in defense matters that allows us to stop depending on the Israeli industry in all areas. In this regard, we support the proposal adopted by the Government of Spain to decree an arms embargo on the Government of Israel," he added. The words of the leader drew applause from the vast majority of the room, with the exception of the representatives of the minority Radical Social Christian party, who arrived with an Israeli flag.
Chile is home to the largest Palestinian community in exile outside of Arab countries, with over 500,000 citizens who have significant influence in the national economy and politics."I invite you not to fight between peoples. Here the responsible one is a genocidal government, not the people of Israel," he concluded.
