The Greek team surprised early with a goal from Chiquinho in the 8th minute, but from then on Mbappé took absolute control of the match. The Frenchman scored a hat-trick in just seven minutes (22', 24' and 29'), coming back from behind and leaving Olympiacos stunned.

A combative Olympiacos forced Madrid to suffer

Despite the merengue advantage, Olympiacos never gave up. Mehdi Taremi scored with a header at the 52’, but Mbappé appeared again to complete his poker of goals at the 60’, reaching nine goals in this edition of the Champions League and placing himself as the sole leader of top scorers. El Kaabi brought drama back to the match with the 3-4 at minute 81, unleashing a final stretch full of tension for the whites. Olympiacos was close to a tie with arrivals from El Kaabi and Gabriel Strefezza in minutes 83 and 85, but Real Madrid managed to hold on until the final whistle.

Triumph that brings relief to Xabi Alonso

The team led by Xabi Alonso, who arrived at the match criticized after a defeat against Liverpool and two consecutive draws in LaLiga, managed to add three valuable points that place them with 12 units out of a possible 15 in the single group of the Champions League. The match also left a historic milestone: it is Real Madrid's first official victory in Athens, after nine previous visits without winning.

Upcoming commitments

  • Real Madrid will receive Manchester City on December 10th in the last matchday of the group stage.
  • Olympiacos, with barely two points, will visit Kairat Almaty to try to keep alive their remote chances of qualification.
