Every June 24th commemorates International Makeup Artist Day, a date dedicated to recognizing the talent, creativity, and artistic sensitivity of those who, through makeup, transform faces and emotions into authentic works of art. Makeup goes far beyond the superficial. It is an artistic discipline that requires precision, technical knowledge, and a deep understanding of the human face. Whether in a film production, a fashion show, a wedding, or a theatrical stage, the makeup artist plays a key role in the construction of identity and visual expression.

An art with history and family legacy

The choice of June 24th is not random. This date pays homage to Bud Westmore, one of the most recognized makeup artists in Hollywood cinema, who passed away on that day in 1973. His legacy remains relevant thanks to his participation in more than 450 film productions, solidifying his name as a benchmark in professional makeup. Bud was part of a true dynasty of makeup artists. His father, George Westmore, founded the first makeup studio in Hollywood and laid the foundations for a profession that his children would transform into art. The Westmore family left a deep mark on the American film industry:
  • Perc Westmore, creator of the lace wig, worked on classic films such as Casablanca (1942) and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948).
  • Ern Westmore was recognized with an Oscar for his work in Cimarron (1931).
  • Mont Westmore did the makeup for stars of Gone with the Wind and was Valentino's personal stylist.
  • Wally Westmore participated in iconic films such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931).
  • Frank Westmore revolutionized makeup with the spray technique, applied in The Ten Commandments (1956).
Bud, the most outstanding of all, was the head of the makeup department at Universal Studios. His genius is reflected in titles such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954).

Makeup as a Form of Expression

Beyond cinema, the work of the makeup artist has gained prominence in everyday life. From photoshoots to social media, makeup has become a form of empowerment, identity, and transformation. With the rise of influencers, tutorials, and innovative products, makeup has ceased to be exclusive to artists and celebrities and has become a universal language of individual expression. Nowadays, makeup professionals also act as image consultants, colorimetry experts, trendsetters, and even activists who promote diversity and inclusion through their art.

International Makeup Artist Day not only celebrates aesthetics, but also the dedication and discipline behind each brush, each shadow, each stroke. It is an invitation to recognize those professionals who, with their magic touch, raise the self-esteem of millions of people and make fantasy possible on screens, stages and catwalks.
