SDO. – Lawyer Yery Castro led a firm rejection this Wednesday of the transfer of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeals of Santo Domingo Oeste to the Ciudad Judicial de Santo Domingo Este, warning that the measure would affect access to justice for more than 700,000 citizens of this demarcation.
During the protest, representatives of the Santo Domingo Oeste Litigating Lawyers Society expressed that the opposition to the transfer responds to the defense of the constitutional right of citizens to receive a close, timely and efficient justice, and not to particular interests of the legal sector.
They indicated that Santo Domingo Oeste is among the municipalities with the highest population density in the country, a reality that gave rise to its recognition as a criminal jurisdiction and the progressive installation of specialized courts, including the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal, which has allowed to decongest processes and facilitate access to judicial services.

They warned that a possible relocation of the courtroom would imply greater difficulties for users and legal professionals, by generating longer displacements, delays in the processes and higher economic costs, especially affecting people with physical limitations and scarce resources. The guild called on the Supreme Court of Justice and the Judicial Council to maintain the courtroom in the demarcation and continue advancing the decentralization of judicial services. They also urged the Ministry of Housing and Buildings to expedite the completion of the judicial city being built in Santo Domingo Oeste. During the day, the lawyers warned that, if their demands were not met, they could resort to legal actions and other institutional measures, reiterating that their fight will remain within the peaceful and legal framework. The demonstration took place on the morning of this Wednesday near the Prosecutor's Office of Santo Domingo Oeste, where dozens of lawyers gathered wearing gowns and mortarboards, under the slogan: "No to the transfer. The Court is from Santo Domingo Oeste."
