NEW YORK. - Former President Leonel Fernández lamented this Saturday the prolonged "blackout" that occurred at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA) which caused the delay of several flights.
Prior to an Oath in New York, the three-time president recalled that the Dominican Republic is sustained by tourism and the inability to guarantee electrical energy at the airport shows a bad image of the country.
He pointed out that the blackouts, which extend for 4, 8, 10 and even 12 hours, have gotten out of control. "We are a tourist country, we depend on aviation and if we cannot guarantee that the airport has electricity, that is a disaster for us," said Fernández.
He explained that although there are other problems in the country, the blackouts have become a calamity that has gotten out of control. He considered the situation to be distressing and urged the Government to find a solution to this problem.
The opposition leader spoke in these terms before heading an oath at the headquarters of the Fuerza del Pueblo Party in New York.
