The National Assembly of Venezuela ratified the strategic association and cooperation treaty between Caracas and Moscow, which covers various areas and defines the directions of joint work between the two countries in the long term.
The document was signed in May by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, during his visit to Moscow to participate in the commemorative celebrations of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War.
What is the agreement about?
The pact indicates that Moscow and Caracas have the will to develop and strengthen multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation and expand the partnership in the field of trade, economy, investments, science, technology, and culture.
As part of the agreement, which will be in effect for ten years and will be automatically renewed every five years, the parties agree to:
Strengthen the association of equal trust and strategic cooperation by maintaining a regular and close political and diplomatic dialogue.
Promote compliance with the rules of international law by all members of the international community.
Firmly oppose unilateral coercive and restrictive measures (sanctions).
Combat the legacy and falsification of the history of colonialism, denounce racism and genocide.
Jointly oppose the glorification of Nazism, the resurgence of neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of intolerance.
Cooperate on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation issues, contributing to international stability and the equal and indivisible security of all States without exception.
Cooperate closely in the fight against international terrorism and extremism, against cross-border organized crime, against corruption, and against the production and trafficking of drugs.
Promote joint initiatives within the framework of OPEC+ and other organizations and work for a balanced and stable long-term development of global energy markets and cooperate in the energy sector.
Work with the aim of developing their national economies, carrying out joint investment projects, and increasing the volume of bilateral trade.
Strengthen their ties in the field of defense, carry out technical-military cooperation to strengthen defense capacity and ensure the security of both countries.
Continue peaceful cooperation in the space sphere.
"The expression of brotherhood"
According to the president of the Venezuelan Legislative, Jorge Rodríguez, the agreement represents "the expression of brotherhood, the expression of a different way of relating between peoples and governments, the expression of the increasingly solid and persistent condition of friendship, brotherhood and cooperation between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela".
Rodríguez specified that "it is extremely encouraging that the relations between two brotherly peoples, that the relations between Russia and Venezuela, are increasingly solid and will be increasingly fruitful and beneficial for both peoples in the future."
