At the origin of this initiative is the Akatu Institute, which in 2013 launched Edukatu as an interactive educational platform aimed at schools throughout Brazil to propose practical activities, fun online resources, and collaborative challenges to try to get young people to reflect on their habits and seek sustainable solutions. So far, 9,000 schools have participated and 19,000 educators have been trained with this program that has reached hundreds of thousands of students. The prize, which involves $50,000 for each winner, will be awarded this Thursday at a ceremony at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The other two winners are the Pro Eco Azuero Foundation of Panama and a project to preserve the sacred forest of Ookpo, dedicated to the Ondo (Oranyan) divinity through conservation, ecotourism and education for heritage.
