Connecticut mall shooting leaves five injured

A shooting at a Connecticut mall left at least five people injured, police reported. The Waterbury police chief, Fernando Spagnolo, stated that officers responded to the Brass Mill Center mall due to reports of a disturbance around 4:40 p.m.

In turn, he stated that all the victims were being treated in local hospitals, although he declined to give details about the severity of their injuries.

Spagnolo stated that the police believe that the attacker, who had a semi-automatic pistol, knew the victims and that the shooting was preceded by a dispute that quickly escalated.

He commented that the police have not made any arrests so far, but believes there are no further threats to the public.

“We don't believe this was a random act of violence,” Spagnolo said at a press conference outside the mall.

The Brass Mill Center is located near Interstate 84 in Waterbury, about 48 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Hartford, the state capital.
