Santo Domingo.— The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Álvarez, will make a firm call for the fulfillment of the commitments made to help Haiti during his participation in the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which will be held in Antigua and Barbuda from June 25 to 27, the Dominican Foreign Ministry reported this Monday. According to an official statement, Álvarez will reiterate his concern about the worsening of the Haitian crisis, which, as he warned, represents a direct threat to the security of both the Dominican Republic and the entire region. Under the slogan "Building resilient and inclusive economies in the Americas", the event will also be a platform for other diplomatic activities. Among them, the Dominican chancellor will preside over the second ministerial meeting of the Summit Implementation Review Group (GRIC), as part of the preparations for the X Summit of the Americas, scheduled to be held at the end of this year in Punta Cana.

The crisis in Haiti, marked by the growing violence of armed gangs, responsible for murders, kidnappings, and rapes, will be one of the central themes at this 55th General Assembly of the OAS, the first under the mandate of the new Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, from Suriname.

One of the resolution projects to be voted on urges member states to urgently reinforce their actions in search of concrete solutions for the Haitian crisis, and to provide support to the security mission deployed in 2023, led by Kenya.

According to figures from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, at least 2,680 people died due to internal violence in Haiti between January and May of this year. In addition, the Caribbean country is home to nearly 1.3 million displaced people, more than half of them children. In 2023, the United Nations verified that violence caused at least 5,626 deaths, 2,213 injuries, and 1,494 kidnappings, figures that demonstrate the constant deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Haiti.
