This afternoon the maximum energy demand and the highest solar generation were reached.

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, reported that the national electricity system reached two historical records this afternoon: an instantaneous peak demand served of 3,923 megawatts (MW) and the highest level of renewable generation of 1,554 MW, a milestone that reflects the sustained growth and diversification of the energy matrix of the Dominican Republic.

Santos explained that the increase in demand responds, mainly, to the high temperatures recorded in recent weeks, which has increased the use of air conditioning systems and other electrical equipment in homes, businesses and industries.

"We are facing a climatic phenomenon that has demanded the maximum response capacity of the system and we have managed to guarantee it thanks to a diversified generation and a strengthened infrastructure," he pointed out.

Santos indicated that the highest level in renewable generation, reaching 1,554 MW, occurred around 1:30 this afternoon, while the maximum demand served of 3,923 MW was at 3:00 in the afternoon.

Record in clean energy

The minister detailed that the 1,554 MW of renewable generation reached today come from different sources: photovoltaic solar (1266.4), wind energy (257.8) and biomass (30).

"This record in clean energy demonstrates that the country's effort to integrate large-scale renewable sources is yielding tangible results, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to a more sustainable matrix," he underlined.

In the specific case of the distribution of that generation, Santos indicated that solar and wind power represented a significant part of the total, complemented by hydroelectric generation and the use of biomass, thus confirming the diversification in the supply of renewable energies.

Diversification as a national strategy

The head of Energy and Mines highlighted that the diversification of the energy matrix is not only a technical objective, but also strategic to guarantee energy security, price stability, and environmental sustainability.

"These records reflect an energy policy that prioritizes investment in new technologies and the harmonious integration of different generation sources," he said.

Minister Santos assured that Energy and Mines will continue to promote projects that strengthen the electrical infrastructure and promote an orderly, efficient energy transition with direct benefits for the population.

"This is another step towards a more robust, modern, and resilient electrical system, capable of responding to the challenges of the present and the future," he concluded.
