The Pope doesn't see it as realistic to seek a peace plan for Ukraine without Europe after Trump's criticism

Vatican City - Pope Leo XIV warned this Tuesday that seeking a peace plan for Ukraine without involving Europe in the negotiations "is not realistic", following criticism from US President Donald Trump of European partners.

"I believe that Europe's role is very important and that the unity of European countries is truly significant, especially in this case," the Pope stated to the media upon leaving his residence in the Roman town of Castel Gandolfo, where he received the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, this morning.

The American pontiff had been asked about the plans of his country's president, Donald Trump, who is conducting two-way negotiations in search of a peace agreement, and about the criticisms that the president has directed at the European Union (EU). "Seeking a peace agreement without including Europe in the negotiations is not realistic. The war is in Europe and I believe that, regarding the security guarantees sought today and in the future, Europe must have a role," he has considered. To add, then: "Unfortunately, not everyone understands it that way, but I believe there is a great opportunity for the leaders of Europe to unite and seek solutions together." This Tuesday, in an interview with Politico, Trump accused the EU of being a group of "decaying" countries with weak leaders.
