Although the official cause of death was not reported, his family assured that it was due to kidney complications. He had been admitted to a hospital since December.

"He was hospitalized for kidney problems. One of his kidneys had stopped working and the other stopped working the week of Christmas. His lungs began to fill with fluid. He couldn't even undergo hemodialysis, because he suffered a cardiac arrest. The death certificate hasn't come out yet, but I think it was due to multiple organ failure," declared his nephew, Denis Gomes de Luna, quoted by G1. The burial took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Cemetery of Águas Compridas, the neighborhood where Arlindo Anomalia lived, as he was also known by his followers.
