Trump: Iran wants to make a deal

The U.S. President, Donald Trump, has reiterated his confidence that Iran wants to reach an agreement with Washington. "I think they want to reach an agreement. I think they would be foolish if they didn't want to," he told journalist Larry Kudlow in an interview.

When asked if an agreement with the Iranian Government would be successful, Trump replied: "I don't know. I mean, I don't know. What I know is one thing: they want to reach an agreement. They wouldn't talk to anyone else, but they would with me. But, well, it's a good question. Many people say no".

The tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated at the beginning of January after the threat from the American president, Donald Trump, of a military intervention, initially alleging internal protests in Iran. Although the demonstrations ceased, Washington maintained the pressure, directing its argument towards Tehran's nuclear and missile programs.

On Friday, the first day of indirect contacts between the US and Iran on the nuclear issue took place in Muscat, Oman. The consultations were held separately, with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and the White House special envoy, Steve Witkoff, meeting in turns with the Omani Foreign Minister, Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, who acted as a mediator.

After the meeting, Trump asserted that "Iran seems very interested in reaching an agreement." For his part, Araghchi also described the atmosphere as "positive" and confirmed the willingness to keep the channel of dialogue open. However, from Tehran they have assured on repeated occasions to be prepared to respond to any "strategic error" by the US with "heavy" blows. Furthermore, they have warned that a complete halt to uranium enrichment is "absolutely unacceptable" for the Persian nation.
