Frente Amplio condemns new national blackout and warns about structural crisis of the Dominican electricity system

Santo Domingo.- The Frente Amplio expressed its strongest condemnation of the new event of massive interruption of the electrical service registered this Monday, which marks the second occasion in a short period in which a large-scale failure once again exposes the vulnerability of the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI). The political organization stated that the fall of more than 60% of the energy generation, which caused a partial blackout in a large part of the national territory, constitutes an alarming sign of the structural deterioration of the system and evidences the absence of strategic planning, timely maintenance and effective supervision by the authorities responsible for the electricity sector.

"The country cannot normalize that repeated technical failures paralyze national production, affect hospitals, businesses and homes, while the Government remains silent or responds with late and insufficient explanations," said Maria Teresa Cabrera, president of the Frente Amplio

The FA recalled that in November 2025, a general blackout had already occurred associated with the San Pedro de Macorís substation, a situation that should have triggered institutional alarms to prevent new events. However, in the organization's opinion, the repetition of incidents demonstrates that the necessary corrective measures have not been adopted to guarantee the stability of the electricity transmission and generation system. The organization demanded that the central Government, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED), the Superintendency of Electricity, and regulatory bodies offer clear and immediate explanations to the country, as well as publish an independent technical report detailing the real causes of the energy collapse, the institutional responsible parties, and the corrective actions that will be implemented, while warning that these repeated blackouts have direct consequences on the popular economy, increasing production costs and deteriorating the quality of life of Dominicans.
