Lightning destroys luxury yacht of businessman Fernando Capellán in Puerto Plata

PUERTO PLATA. – A lightning bolt completely destroyed the vessel El Capi IV, owned by the Santiago businessman Fernando Capellán, after a fire recorded early this Monday in the Bahía de Luperón, Puerto Plata province. The electrical impact occurred in the middle of a storm affecting the northern area of the country, generating a fire that consumed the entire ship in minutes.

Despite the magnitude of the disaster, no human losses or environmental damage were recorded, according to the Chaplain himself in an official statement. The rapid intervention of the fire departments of Luperón, Imbert, Maimón and Puerto Plata, along with the Civil Defense and the Navy, allowed to control the situation and prevent the flames from spreading to other vessels anchored at the pier. The businessman thanked the relief agencies and the mayor of Luperón, Román Israel Brito, for the collaboration provided during the emergency. The incident occurred after 2:00 a.m. this Monday in the so-called "Bride of the Atlantic". Capellán emphasized that, although the vessel was completely destroyed, the event did not affect biodiversity or the waters of the bay.
