Nairobi.- At least 25 people were rescued after the shipwreck that occurred last Sunday in a river in northwestern Nigeria, in the state of Sokoto, while another 25 remain missing, authorities reported.
"25 passengers were rescued alive, while 25 are missing", the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA) said on the social network X, pointing to strong winds or overloading as possible causes of the accident.

In a message released shortly after midnight, NEMA detailed that no bodies have been found so far, although seven motorcycles have been recovered. The boat capsized on Sunday while heading to Goronyo market with fifty passengers on board. Shipwrecks, often caused by overloading of vessels and poor regulation of water transport, are common in Nigeria, where passengers often do not wear life jackets, which exacerbates the mortality of accidents. Last December, at least 54 people died in another river shipwreck in Kogi state, in the central-west of the country.
