Judge Alexandre de Moraes, the most media-savvy member of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF), ruled out this Thursday authorizing preventive detention against former President Jair Bolsonaro, despite committing an "isolated irregularity" regarding the prohibition of using social media.
The defense proved that Bolsonaro has complied with the confinement rules ordered by De Moraes, as part of the precautionary measures imposed against him last week. The former president is accused of his alleged link to the attempted coup and, now, for the alleged actions that he and one of his sons have carried out so that the US sanctions Brazilian officials.
The judge also clarified that Bolsonaro is not prohibited from giving interviews or delivering public or private speeches; what he is forbidden from doing is disseminating his words on social media, especially through actions of "digital militias" previously coordinated with his followers.
