NEW YORK.– The Chicago White Sox managed to stop another sweep by convincingly defeating the New York Mets 9 runs to 4, in the last game of the series played this Wednesday at Citi Field.
The victory was fueled by an explosive offensive night from Andrew Benintendi, who was a double away from completing the cycle. The outfielder hit a single, a triple, and a home run, in addition to driving in four of Chicago's nine runs. His performance made the difference in a game where the visitors gave no respite from the first inning.
The White Sox built their lead early, capitalizing on defensive errors by the Mets and adding timely hits. A run-scoring double by Mike Tauchman in the second inning and a rally in the sixth inning sealed the fate of the game in favor of the American League team.
On the mound, the victory went to Brandon Eisert, who pitched a clean inning in relief, while Griffin Canning took the loss after a complicated start in which he allowed five runs, three of them earned.
For the Mets, the only offensive spark came with a three-run homer by Mark Vientos in the third inning, in addition to a run-scoring double by Pete Alonso in the ninth. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
With this result, the White Sox break a losing streak in away series and slightly improve their record, while the Mets lose ground in the race for the lead in the National League. Both teams rest this Thursday and prepare for new series starting Friday.
