Santo Domingo. - Former senator of Azua and member of the Central Committee of the PLD Rafael Calderón questioned the recent ruling of the Constitutional Court (TC) that declared unconstitutional the regulations that criminalized consensual sexual relations between people of the same sex in the Armed Forces and the National Police.
Calderón pointed out that although the ruling is limited to the disciplinary sphere, it sets a dangerous precedent that threatens Article 55 of the Dominican Constitution, which clearly defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman.
He described as worrying that the Constitutional Court, under the guise of human rights, is eroding the spirit of the Magna Carta without a legitimate legislative debate.

"We demand that the PRM government halt the opening to agendas that seek to modify the fundamental structure of the Dominican family. The State must maintain unrestricted respect for the constitutional text that protects the family as the fundamental nucleus of our society," affirmed the head of the Secretariat of Culture of the PLD. He also criticized the attention given to this sentence while the country faces urgent social and economic crises. "The national urgency is to address insecurity, inflation, and the collapse of essential services that affect the vast majority of Dominican families," he emphasized. He reaffirmed his defense of natural law and Church doctrine, which holds that marriage is the exclusive and invariable union between a man and a woman. "This decision is a warning. We categorically reject any attempt to use this precedent to move towards the legalization of same-sex marriage, which is contrary to our faith and the principles of the nation," he concluded. Calderón urged the PRM government to redirect its priorities towards the true needs of the people and ensure the legal protection of the family in accordance with the Constitution.
